Jay-Z and Alicia Keys Overcome the Worst Sound in the History of Sound, Kill It at World Series
L Mag —
There is simply no excuse for the sound on last night's Jay-Z/Alicia Keys performance of "Empire State of Mind" before game two of the World Series being as abysmal as it was. But there's also simply no logical explanation for how there came to be a song that is this awesome. The first time she comes in with the chorus? Chills, yo. (Still rooting for the Phillies, though.)

Whatever the official sports etiquette line is in terms of fair play and sportsmanship, we can safely say the Yankees organization crossed it, did a fake line off it, and then lit it on fire last night, parading Jay-Z (in a Yankee varsity jacket), Alicia Keys (purple), and backing band (Yankee jerseys) out into centerfield to perform hometown anthem/windblown disaster "Empire State of Mind" before a crucial Game 2 against the Phillies. A game the Phillies would go on to lose (thanks Jay!). The Times ...
World Series is a Dead Heat, but the Yankees Win at Congress

Game 2 of the World Series was last night, and it was a pretty solid night for the Yanks. Not only did they rebound from the near-blowout of Game 1, but Jay-Z and Alicia Keys performed “Empire State of Mind” in the stadium (see above). And on top of that, OpenSecrets is reporting that in the war of campaign contributions, they’re beating the Phillies handily.
Since its inception during the 2002 election cycle, the Major League Baseball Commissioner’s Office Political Action Committee has donated about two-and-a-half times as much money to federal candidates ...
Jay-Z, Alicia Keys rock Yankee Stadium
NY Post: News —
New York natives Jay-Z and Alicia Keys kicked off Game 2 of the World Series last night with a pre-game performance of the now-Big Apple anthem "Empire State of Mind" from center field at Yankee Stadium in The Bronx. Wearing a Yankees hat and jacket, Jay-Z sang to a stadium of fans that continued to cheer even when the Brooklyn-born rapper chanted, "I made the Yankee hat more famous than a Yankee can." The long awaited video with Jay-Z and Alicia Keys for Empire State of Mind is finally here. The initial buzz began when the video crew began shooting in Harlem on 145th and Broadway weeks ago. There were celebrity sightings and some of our Twitter followers even stopped by to give us an on the scene play by play. [Follow Us @AroundHarlem]
I was definitely looking forward to the video. Alicia Keys’ lyrics below sum up everything that I’ve always said about New York. I joke that if I hadn’t been born here, I’d ...
Important Questions: Is Jay-Z's "Empire State of Mind" the new "New York, New York"? [Anthems]
Gawker —
There's an entire Sunday Styles item on Jay-Z's nu- New York anthem, which has now been performed at the VMAs , the World Series , City Hall , your son's bris, and everywhere else. Should Hova step off, or should Sinatra step over? Penned by one Mr. Ben Sisario whose writing is typically quite wonderful the song is broken down as such: ...roughly 50 percent rote Jay-Z chest-beating ("I'm the new Sinatra"), 30 percent tourist-friendly travelogue ("Statue of Liberty, long live the World Trade") and the rest a glorious Alicia Keys hook. Which is true! Jay-Z goes from the Bronx to Tribeca and back; most people who live in the West Village like ...
